This Day in History

Peaches the palomino
was found safe and sound Monday in the Knowlton County where she went missing.

A New York family is frantically searching for their horse, Peaches, who went missing Thursday night in Warren County. Peaches is a 4-year-old, 15.1-hand Palomino Paint Mare. She has a bald face, gold body, bright white mane and tail, four white socks and a splash near her knee. She does not have a halter and is up-to-date on all vaccinations, according to an e-mail from owner Colleen Segarra. She was last seen Thursday night on Knowlton Road in Knowlton Township. Family and authorities have searched the farm and surrounding woods and trails since Friday morning. Bait stations with horse feed were set up, but without success. Sagarra says in the e-mail that the horse belongs to her teenage daughter, who is devastated by her disappearance. "Peaches is a family member, very much loved and terribly missed," Sagarra writes. "If you see a horse like this, please report it ASAP. If you have her please return her. If you bought her not knowing the situation, we will not hassle you and will buy her back. Please help bring Peaches home." Stolen Horse International has created fliers with information on Peaches. New Jersey State Police at the Hope barracks have been involved in the search, but they did not have an update on Peaches this morning. Segarra could not be reached for additional comment this morning.

UPDATE: Missing horse named Peaches found safe in Knowlton Township

A Knowlton Township resident spotted the mare and contacted owner Colleen Segarra, who has been crisscrossing the region handing out fliers about the wayward horse. Click to read how Eloise Schooley described finding Peaches in a yard on Ramseyburg Road. When she wandered away Thursday, Peaches was on loan to a township resident, who needed a temporary companion for an elderly horse whose regular companion horse was away for training. Segarra runs a rescue, rehabilitation and adoption business in Orange County, N.Y. Peaches, she said, is beloved by her daughter. "I never want to see my daughter look like that again," Segarra said, recalling her child's reaction to news that Peaches was gone. "It broke my heart to see her heartbroken." The horse suffered some scratches and separation anxiety but emerged from her adventure otherwise unscathed, Segarra said. Initially, Segarra feared someone had stolen the 4-year-old horse and was trying to sell her.

DOG DIARY VERSUS CAT DIARY

The Dog's Diary:

12:00 pm - Milk bones! My favorite thing!
1:00 pm - Played in the yard! My favorite thing!
3:00 pm - Wagged my tail! My favorite thing!
5:00 pm - Dinner! My favorite thing!
7:00 pm - Got to play ball! My favorite thing!
8:00 pm - Wow! Watched TV with the people! My favorite thing!
11:00 pm - Sleeping on the bed! My favorite thing!
------------------------------------------
The Cat's Diary:
Day 983 of my captivity. My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength. The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet.

Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates my capabilities. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a "good little hunter" I am. Jerks! There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of "allergies." I must learn what this means, and how to use it to my advantage. Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking.

I must try this again tomorrow, but at the top of the stairs. I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released, and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded. The bird must be an informant. I observe him communicate with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now.

Knowlton Music Festival
From: Amélie Fournier [mailto: afournier@bflcanada.ca] Sent: May 25, 2009 12:18 AM To: Amélie Fournier Subject: MUSIC FESTIVAL OF KNOWLTON Dear Sir / Madam, Last summer, the music festival Knowlton with Maestro Kent Nagano and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra has been a great success. The concerts were played to sold out. The musicians and singers of world-renowned operas were graciously welcomed and accommodated in the homes of local residents. The municipality, the Chamber of Commerce and local businesses have given their full cooperation in the event. It was an artistic event which brought together the community of Knowlton and the Eastern Townships as never before. Following this unprecedented success, the Festival of Knowlton will now become an annual event. Local residents have given their support to Mario Genoni for the creation of the Music Festival Knowlton, a non-profit corporation which will assume responsibility for financing and operation of the musical event of world-class. The company is pleased to benefit from the commitment of Maestro Kent Nagano, artistic director of the OSM and the collaboration of Professor Bruno Cagli, president of the Accademia Nazionale de Santa Cecilia in Rome, one of the oldest musical and most famous in the world. Knowlton Festival 2009 will take place from 7 to 16 August on a new location that was given by a generous patron, who would become his permanent home. Please find enclosed the program in preparation for the month of August 2009 .. I am speaking to you today to request your support for this project with exceptional benefits to the region of Cantons de l'Est et de l'Estrie in terms of education and culture while providing a force of attraction unique. Also, during the festival, a special event will be held at the Armory of Laurent and Claire Beaudoin August 9 Tables will be sold at a cost of $ 10,000 and can accommodate 10 people. Sir/Madam: While strolling in Knowlton early in May during a light rain, I snapped this photo of an extraordinary, interesting, attractively decorative (bronze?) figure on the main street opposite the falls, a little downhill from the Bank of Montreal. Who was the artist who created it? When was it cast? What is to be done with it? Yours truly, Daniel Slatkin PS You may use my photo freely for Knowlton Town publicity, with or without attribution to me - as you choose.

Pictures of my trip to Knowlton Canada

Pictures of my trip to Florida & Hawaii

in may, 2009 our destinationknowlton.com pick for "knowlton of of the month" is our one and only knowlton court, canterbury kent
http://www.knowltoncourt.co.uk/index.html

Knowlton lies in quiet countryside 9 miles south of Canterbury and 5 miles from Sandwich and the coast. Horses graze the land of the estate and there are plenty of attractions nearby. The accommodation range from our beautiful Elizabethan Dower House which sleeps up to 19 in 9 bedrooms, most of which are en-suite, to other houses and flats which sleep from 12 to 6. Our houses are modernised, attractively decorated and well-equipped for self-catering. All linen is provided and towels can be hired if necessary. Public transport is very limited and visitors are advised that it is necessary to have their own transport.

Meanwhile...A Letter to The Editor arrives...
At the May 4 town meeting, with his Knowlton fan club, the usual camp followers and a few citizens in attendance. Town of Brome Lake mayor, Richard Wisdom, in the most authoritative voice he could muster, declared that English on the "Centre Lac Brome" signs " a dead horse".

His Worship, a native of east end Montreal who dropped in for dinner 30 years ago then unfortunately never left, is now busy rearranging his hosts furniture. Never impressed with local history or the resident English community and acceding to the wishes of the shadowy Fondation Carke Inc. and our imported Anglophobic town manager Jean Bourret.

The mayor and apparently BCN correspondent Jessica Brown (May 12), have ruled on the issue "once and for all". Pretend defender and English language bender and blender, councilor Alain Gauthier, exercising his TBL version of integrity, completed his 180 degree turnaround and proposed the illegal 3 year old "no English and never submitted to council ," signs be approved.

Our dead zone council, after 3 years of maintaining the " bilingual" subterfuge and cover up, unanimously agreed. 200 years of English on civic buildings in Knowlton was temporally interrupted. Going forward, Mr. Wisdom chided me for my "unfair, very unfair" references to mentor Jean Bourret's non-resident status. Imagine anyone being "unfair" to Jean Bourret, I feared a being struck down by divine intervention. Indignant, councilor George Bristol joined the mayor in Bourret ego stroking with " one of the finest men I've ever known" and " were lucky to have him".

Comfortably retired and on the town payroll, the expatriate West Bromer might not feel quite as "lucky" if he was a young Anglo seeking employment at Mr. Bourret's judiciously maintained English free, Anglo free, 0% representation " Lac Brome " city hall. Alain Roy, town clerk, announced yet another town hall hiring. Meeting stringent Ville de Lac Brome and Jean Bourret standards, the new Francophone student recruit, clipboard in hand, will seek out "contraventions" amongst the citizenry. He joins the "Big Brother" fraternity of the building inspector, the chimney inspector, the fire inspector, the septic tank inspector, the crucial lawn fertilizer inspector and I suspect at least one clandestine sign inspector. Must be getting crowded at the Mairie Ville de Lac Brome's 122 Lakeside office !

SPECULATION....An appeal for funding a huge " New Town Hall " can't be too far off, Anglos, hang on to your money.

PREDICTION... When all the money is collected "Town Hall" will morph into" Hotel de Ville" only, don't get fooled again. Douglas Alexander, a self confessed long time 6 year resident, lamented my ongoing hostilities. Sighting administration cooperation in changing the zoning on the previously residential Victoria St to accommodate his art gallery. He left after delivering his accolades. Mr. Alexander might want to talk to the owners of Stonehaven or LJH Transport, their town business experiences may differ from his. Jean Bourret, of all people, announced the formation of a TBL "ethics" committee. The committee would be bilingual he explained, not as a concession to English speakers of course, but in order to receive federal funding. Bourret "fool the feds", TBL "ethics" in action.

While our mercenary, highly paid town manager needs the word "ethics" and its meaning explained, I would not recommend his querying any of his council confreres. Ethics and the TBL administration, like water and oil, don't mix. Despite pronouncements from on low, English will be given space on the building. Worst case, in November, when city hall is cleared of trash and representative integrity is hopefully restored. Were in the right, we can't lose.

English on a sign is not considered an obscenity in the rest of the free world and it's not going to be here in its native Brome county. The obscenity here, is in green and gold and hangs on the community centre. "Centre Lac Brome". Bilingual signs, like November, are coming soon.

Todays Opinion : Brought to you by Ima Dimwit:
Today...from Knowlton, Quebec...we have a letter from someone about some sort of new housing initiative to entice new taxpayers to a town.

< < < < < This photo shows a new home in Lac-Brome that can be bought for under $200,000 as part of the new Young Families Initiative

New Lack-Brome Housing Program gets a big laugh! Did anyone bother to read the headlines in the paper?:::

Basically....the town is going to give a break on the obscene taxes in the town to new familes who buy a new home in Lac-Brome that costs under $200,000 including the property. Ok...pardon me for sounding like a Youtube Newbie but last time I checked the for sale section of the Brome County Snooze or The Tempo Newspaper in Knowlton I didn't see a new home under $300,000 unless you consider a pre-fab on 1/4 acre of land directly on a busy highway to be a good deal and then it may be for sale: $180,000 for a lovely 950 square feet Maison Alouette with a nice view of a cell tower, a parking lot, a truck turn and a manure field!

More details can be found Tous les détails sont disponibles à l'hôtel de ville de Lac-Brome where officials said they didn't want to have the same positive program as in Cowansville...oh no...heaven forbid the town grew and prospered like Cowansville? . The Hotel de Ville Lac Brome is right across the street from all the Real Estate agencies where a look at the listing shows NO NEW HOMES UNDER $200,000!! According to the CMHC data the average cost of all MLS lsitings for homes in Canada in 2007 was $207,000...and that includes Labrador and Nunavut...image what the MLS average would be here???...Mister Bourett the Lac-Brome Town Manager said in the Voix de Lest Newspooper nterview that in Lac-Brome the avergae home price is "apparently" $243,000 for a house...ummm...perfect...that means the towns new much trumpeted initiative doesn't have to even allow one working young family into the gates...heckus macbeckus...last time the real estate section of the paper opened it looked like buying a decent house was costing $500,000 to $2 million in this neck of the woods!

Basically, the translation of this new Town Young Family Housing Initiative should be : "Wealthy people only need apply to live here"

Thanks Ima Dimwit...have you ever heard of a spellchecker?!!!! By the way...thanks for emailing this instead of showing up at our door like some sort of rubby!!!

Knowlton & Teknika Get Together Again To Spin A Web Of Cyanobacteria Super-Hero
Is Teknika HBA Missing The Boat in Lac-Brome
Teknia late again with an answer for the lake

LetterToTheEditor by Richard Desjardins (Resident of Lac Brome)

"Pierre Bertrand of the firm Teknika and The Mayor of Brome Lake, Richard Wisdom, seem to be together again making news and public announcements about how your tax money will be so wisely spent to fight blue-green algae in Brome Lake. Perfect...two "experts" have the plan! Meanwhile while residents on the lake living in million dollar homes can pollute the lake at will the "Pierre & Dick" show are trying to snuggle with the media about spending our money to make the lake healthy.

Why doesn't the MOE act on complaints of pollution leaking into the lake by the millionaires on the waterfront? Is anyone awake at the wheel in the town when lakeside residents ask about pollution? The town is lapping up the inflated taxes of Lac-Brome and the rich folks along the lake can pollute, poison, fertilize without issue...too much tax dollars involved...no way the elected Ville de Lack Brome would dare confront their pork barrel of tax income!! When people complain to the Town...there is no response...

They prefer to throw the tax dollars into a firm like Teknika to come up with a useless action plan that has no teeth and just leads to more juicy projects for Teknika HBA.

Wasn't Pierre Bertrand of Teknika the engineering firm that gobbled up closs to 1/4 million dollars to summarize a few wikipedia pages of information in a pretty package on how to reduce phosphorous in the lake? Meanwhile the Town of Lac-Brome continued to dig up wetlands and allow permits for building within watersheds as if everything was fine all the while saying they wanted to get tough...ummm...tough on spin maybe?

Meanwhile...the Mill Pond is rotting and the Town practically ignores any input of the locals...well that's not true...Teknika may soon be considered an honorary citizen...or maybe the decisions are made by the "Silent Majority" that runs the Hotel De Ville?

Dear Richard Desjardins (Resident of Lac Brome) , Thank-you for writing! Seeing government waste is nothing new and since "The Silent Majority" seems to be running the show with your money in Lac-Brome nothing should be a surprise. I guess you were responding to this little throw-away story where the Town of Brome Lake PR department decided it would be usefull to make a press release regarding the lake...hold on...my head is spinning!! Thanks for the letter! Anyone want to comment feel free to email DK at info at destinationknowlton.com

"On va pouvoir voir si ça fonctionne.
